A cannabinoid treatment for COVID-19 ?

Cannabis for COVID-19!

The COVID-19 crisis is still running …But many of us believed the spread of the virus would slow down this summer.

Indeed, high temperatures and the sun are often considered as excellent disinfectants!

However, despite our best efforts and the climate change, the number of Covid-19 cases continues to increase. We broke a record of new daily cases last week especially in the USA

Cannabis sales take off

Quite unexpectedly, in the United States, cannabis sales are increasing along with the number of cases: the industry is clearly expanding.

In Colorado state, monthly revenue hit all-time highs, reaching $ 192 million in May. Illinois just legalized recreational use of cannabis earlier this year, and broke a new monthly record in June, with $ 47.6 million in revenue.

Data is quite the same in all states that publish them. Oregon broke a new record in May ($ 103 million), and managed to exceed that amount again in June. Arizona sold a record amount of medical marijuana in May, sales also hit record highs in Oklahoma.

I think the figures continued to increase in June and July. Furthermore, cannabis could be helpful against COVID-19 in other ways.

Could Cannabis Help Treat COVID-19?

Many people are convinced of this. The world is struggling to end this pandemic, and many are taking a very close interest in the possible use of cannabis in the fight against SARS-CoV-2.

Of course, I am not talking about “homemade” self-medication here on the basis of anecdotal evidence, but rather solid scientific work organized in research laboratories around the world.

Some people who died from COVID-19 are affected by Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), caused by an uncontrollable inflammatory reaction, sometimes called “cytokine storm”.

Several experiments on mince showed that THC – arguably the most well-known cannabinoid – was able to protect 100% of those exposed to bacterial toxins from symptoms of ARDS.

Researchers at the University of Nebraska and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute are trying to determine how the properties of CBD, another cannabinoid, might helped to prevent patients from dying from ARDS. CBD has a favorable tolerance profile, even at high doses. These scientists believe it may be useful in reducing SARS-CoV-2-related lung inflammation and alleviating the severity of the disease.

In Jamaica, researchers also detected a flavonoid in a plant, that is capable of reducing the consequences of COVID-19 infections. The research is so promising that it has gained support from the National Institute of Health in the United States (NIH).

Another group of Canadian researchers also published an article on the potential benefits of cannabinoids like CBD in fighting infection. SARS-CoV-2 is believed to infect patients through cellular receptors called ACE2, located in lung cells. The researchers used oral, lung and digestive tissue models to predict the effects of high-concentration CBD extracts on the expression level of ACE2 receptors: a reduction was observed!

The authors discussed the use of cannabis-based mouthwashes that are easy to use and may be useful against COVID-19 infections.

Medical cannabis is gaining traction

Some of this academic research could end up leading to appealing investments in big pharmaceutical companies who could use cannabis to develop new treatments.

Pharmaceutical giants have often done this: this is particularly the case of GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: GWPH), a company that aleady successfully markets cannabis-based treatments. Its market value is over $ 52 billion.

GW Pharmaceuticals market value exceeds $ 52 billion

It is also a good model for making quick profits from stocks in this volatile sector. Again this morning, a Canadian biotech (small cap) grew by 40% after the publication of information on its discovery of a cannabinoid with antiviral properties that seems to work on COVID-19.

Profit opportunities will not be lacking in the coming days in the field of medical cannabis … keep your eyes open!
